Dr Pepper StarCenter McKinney at Craig Ranch to expand

Following approval from City Council for a new 20-year lease agreement, the Dr Pepper StarCenter McKinney at Craig Ranch will expand to include an additional ice rink with 1,800 seats, as well as more parking and expanded locker rooms.

Funding for the 46,000-square-foot expansion will come from a $3.5 million grant from the McKinney Community Development Corporation (MCDC) and $5 million from the City of McKinney. According to the lease agreement, the StarCenter will pay $60,000 per month for rent for years one through five, and $65,000 per month for years six through 20.

“The MCDC board was excited to learn about the Stars’ interest in expanding the McKinney facility and is pleased to partner with the city and the Dallas Stars organization to make this happen. Adding another sheet of ice and 1,800 seats at the StarCenter will allow for increased programming for the community, and also will support larger events and tournaments that will encourage tourism and support business development in McKinney,” said Board Chair Kurt Kuehn.

“Facilities like the StarCenter are part of the quality of life that make McKinney unique and attract new residents here in record numbers,” said Mayor George Fuller. “An expansion of the facility could become a catalyst for attracting large events or even a minor league hockey team to the area, leading to increased economic opportunities for the community.”

The StarCenter opened in 2009 as a partnership between the Dallas Stars, the City of McKinney, MCDC and Craig Ranch. Additionally, Dr Pepper is the primary sponsor of the facility.

The current facility has two sheets of ice, a full-service StarStuff pro shop, a snack bar and four meeting rooms. The StarCenter is home to two hockey associations: the McKinney Ice Hockey Club which fields teams in the AT&T High School Hockey League, and the Texas Aces, which fields travel teams of all ages in the North Texas Hockey League. The facility also features beginner leagues for youth and adult hockey players run by the Dallas Stars, advanced adult hockey leagues, a Learn-to-Skate program, figure skating, birthday parties, public skating, corporate team building events, private ice rentals, camps, clinics, tournaments and skating competitions.

The facility brings approximately 250,000 visitors annually. In addition, the Dallas Stars Hockey Club practice at the Dr Pepper StarCenter McKinney at Craig Ranch once every year. The next practice is scheduled for October 4.
